Ugo Tesoriere (1923–2003) was a Brooklyn-born artist who made a radical midlife transformation, leaving a successful medical career to pursue painting in Italy. After relocating to Rome in 1959, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti under the guidance of Valeria Giannini—his mentor, muse, and wife—and devoted more than four decades to art. Best known for his spiritually perceptive portraiture, Tesoriere sought what he called “real art,” valuing truth and inner life over commercial success. Influenced by artists such as Giorgio Morandi, his portraits, landscapes, and still lifes reveal a profound ability to see beyond surfaces into the soul of his subjects. At the end of his life, Tesoriere entrusted his artistic legacy to Father Francis Kline, then Abbot of Mepkin Abbey near Charleston, South Carolina, reflecting his belief in the monastic tradition as a steward of art and spiritual culture.
